Is Your Refrigerator Running?

Cool Tips to Keep Your Fridge Running During the Summer Season

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., June 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Summer is the
time of year when refrigerators are working hardest and when many
breakdowns occur. When it comes to preventing a meltdown this fridge
season, knowledge is power. Here are some cool facts about refrigerators,
as well as tips to help you save both energy and money.
    GREEN SAVERS
-- Did you know that your refrigerator uses the most electricity of all of
the appliances in your home? In fact, every time you open the
refrigerator door, up to 30 percent of the cold air can escape.(1) A
quick fix is to avoid standing and staring into the fridge, pondering
its contents. Decide what you need before opening the door -- you'll
preserve your food and the environment.
-- An ENERGY STAR(R) qualified refrigerator can reduce as much as 1100 lbs
of air polluting chemical emissions (C02) over its life cycle.(2)
Consider replacing that clunky old fridge and trading up for a new
       energy-efficient model.
-- Today's ENERGY STAR refrigerators use 40 percent less energy than the
typical model manufactured in 2001, and a refrigerator produced in 1990
uses twice the amount of electricity needed to operate an ENERGY STAR
model built today.(2) Consider the age of your refrigerator and how
you might benefit from replacing an older model.
-- Keeping your refrigerator next to the oven forces it to work much
harder to keep things cool when you're cooking and baking. When
possible, avoid placing these appliances next to each other to help
       maximize refrigeration efficiency.

    DID YOU KNOW?
-- Americans purchased $7.5 billion of bottled water in 2003. The new
Kenmore(R) and Kenmore Elite(R) refrigerators with PUR Ultimate filters
eliminate the need to buy or store bottled water because it offers
"America's Best Ice and Water Filtration System."(3)
-- Twenty-three percent of consumers' refrigerators are not cold
enough.(4) Keeping your refrigerator between 32 and 40 degrees will
help discourage the growth of food-borne bacteria.
-- You can keep butter cool but still spreadable using the Dairy Bin area
       of your fridge.
-- Refrigerators with a speed setting on the ice maker, such as Kenmore
models with Acceler-Ice(TM), can produce up to eight lbs of ice in
       24 hours.(5)
